Elena Mihaela Pahonțu

Postdoctoral researcher

Area of scientific interest

  • Research in the field of complex combinations with therapeutic applications

The main research scope is to obtain new biologically active substances, which should lead to enhanced therapeutic stratregies.

The research activity has been directed towards the synthesis, the characterisation and testing of complex combinations, at cell level, in order to establish their antimicrobial activity and/or antitumor activity.

Previous studies reffer to:

– the design and synthesis of the inhibitors of Schiff bases, semicarbazones and  thiosemicarbazones type;

-the design and synthesis of the complex combination of these ligands with pysiological metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+ etc.), whose geometry can be influenced by the coordination capability of the ligands but also by the anion of the metal salt;

-the spectral analysis (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, IR, UV-Vis, EPR, MS) and structural characterization (X- Ray diffraction) with a view to establishing the geometry of the metal center;

-the comparative study of the complexes Cu(II) in a solid state and in DMSO solution, through RPE spectrometry;

-testing of the antimicrobial activity upon different stems Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans;

-testing of the antiproliferative/cytotoxic activity in vitro of the synthesized compounds, on NCI-H1573 lung adenocarcinoma, SKBR-3 human breast, MCF-7 human breast, A375 human melanoma cancer cells and human HL-60 promyelocytic leukemia cells;

-establishment of the correlation activity-structure and prognosis of the synthesis of compounds, active biologically with performing properties.
